HAITI'S RECOVERY NEEDS TOP $1.3 BILLION, NEW REPORT SHOWS

The
interim Government of Haiti, the European Commission, the
Inter-American Development
Bank,
the United Nations and the World Bank today released an assessment
of Haiti’s social, economic and political needs over
the next two years determining that total financing requirements
top $1.3 billion. Given existing financing of some $440 million,
the assessment calls for $924 million to be raised to fill
the

The
international community and the Government of Haiti have
recently embarked
on a new partnership to address the urgent
and medium-term needs of the country. In May and June 2004,
the Haitian government led the preparation of a needs assessment
(interim Cooperation Framework, CCI/ICF) with the assistance
of the international community, national and international
experts, and members of civil society. The CCI/ICF identified
priority interventions and related financing needs to support
the country's economic, social and political recovery over
the next two years. The results of the CCI/ICF will be
presented by the Haitian Government and discussed by participants
at
the International Donors Conference on Haiti on July 19

soft loans for over $340 million are available for disbursement
to support ongoing programs in key economic and social
sectors in Haiti. The Inter-American Development Bank joined
donor countries and multilateral agencies at an international
conference held
in Washington, D.C. to raise financial aid for priority programs
for the political, economic and social recovery in Haiti, the
poorest country in the Western Hemisphere.

a donor conference held at the World Bank in Washington,
D.C. The
Inter-American Development Bank expects to contribute around
$260 million
in new soft loans to Haiti for the period
2004-2006, IDB President Enrique V. Iglesias announced today
at a donor conference held in Washington, D.C. to raise financial
support for Haiti, the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere.
The fresh resources would expand the IDB’s existing
loan portfolio in Haiti, which includes around $340 million
in undisbursed financing for ongoing projects in key sectors
such as health, education, drinking water and sanitation, agriculture,
roads and basic infrastructure. Read more
